Mighty Mosheen a class above in Oaks

Horse Racing

It was all too easy for Mosheen as she lead from start to finish to take out the Crown Oaks by an impressive nine lengths.

Mosheen ($6) show her class as she burned favourite Dowager Queen ($3.50) and Roman Giaconda ($26) down the final straight, showing doubters she could stay beyond the mile, running out the 2500m in full.

Jockey Danny Nikolic said his ride relaxed immediately as she found the lead from her smart barrier two jump.

"As soon as she left the barriers I put her to sleep," he said. "She pulled up super. Today that was a walk, trot and canter. She just played with them."

The victory in the three year old classic is the fifth group one victory for trainer Robert Smerdon.

"I'd hope that she'd relax enough, and she didn't go too hard with the blinkers," Smerdon said. "Most fillies cant quicken like she can."

Mosheen got the best jump, and was joined from Gioe out wide within the first 100m. Dowager Queen and Bart Cummings hope Gliding sat two lengths behind.

With a lax tempo, positions remained stagnant until the final turn where the Fastnet Rock filly blew her opposition away with plenty of energy left to spare.

Gliding slipped away immediately, while Dowager Queen couldn't make the most of her favourable position and watched the eventual winner power ahead.

The winning margin was reminiscent of early market favourite Atlantic Jewel in the Wakeful Stakes on Derby Day.

Smerdon stated last weekend that if Atlantic Jewel had not withdrawn due to a hamstring injury, he would have taken Mosheen on a path that didn't clash with the unbeaten star.
